HICKS - It was the best of halves, it was the worst of halves.

After taking a lead into the halftime intermission, the Hicks Lady Pirates were outscored by almost 20 points in the second half, allowing the Oak Hill Lady Rams to rally for a 59-43 victory in the first round of the Hicks Tournament on Thursday.

Hicks (1-1) trailed by 10 points early in the first period, 13-3, as Catelynn Hatwig scored five points during the surge, while Lauren Richerson added a pair of buckets.

But the Lady Pirates started to slowly chip away.

Beginning with a three-point play by Lexie West, the Lady Pirates went on a 9-0 run, cutting the deficit to 13-12 just minutes into the second quarter.

Eventually, Hicks took control of the game, going up by as much as five points as West, Kayla Pollock and Chela Lack pushed the Lady Pirates out to a 26-21 cushion, the biggest lead of the game.

But a bucket and free throw from Sarah Taylor allowed the Lady Rams (1-1) to get to within two at the break, 26-24.

The Lady Rams scored the first six points of the third quarter on consecutive baskets from Casey Hebert, Hatwig and Jessica Taylor, giving Oak Hill a 30-26 advantage.

The lead eventually stretched to seven points during the frame, but Oak Hill saw Hicks chip a point off by the end of the quarter, taking a 37-31 advantage into the fourth.

However, a 14-2 run, highlighted by six points from Sarah Taylor, along with four each from Hebert and Hatwig, saw Oak Hill open up an 18-point advantage, 51-33.

The lead reached 19 late in the contest, but by then, both benches had been emptied as Oak Hill took the victory.

Hebert led the Lady Rams with 15 points and five rebounds, while Sarah Taylor and Richerson each added 12 points. Hatwig finished with 11 points and six boards.

Pollock led all scorers as she netted 20 points for the Lady Pirates, while also pulling down 10 rebounds and dishing out five assists. Lack added 10 points and 10 rebounds, while West contributed seven points to the cause.

The Lady Pirates will play Glenmora at 11 a.m. Saturday in the consolation finals. Oak Hill takes on Florien at 6:30 p.m. today.

Oak Hill Rams.....64

Hicks Pirates.....38

A huge opening run was all it took as the Oak Hill Rams advanced to the semifinals of the Hicks Tournament with a 64-38 victory over the hosting Pirates on Thursday.

Oak Hill (2-0) will take on Pitkin at 8 p.m. today, while Hicks (0-2) returns to the court at 12:30 p.m. Saturday for a matchup against Glenmora.

The Rams opened up in quick fashion, getting five points from Brett Martin during a 7-0 run before a pair of free throws by Jeremy Goodwin got Hicks on the board.

The lead eventually expanded to 18 points by the end of the first period as Oak Hill took a 26-8 cushion into the second quarter.

A free throw by Zack West, along with a three-point play by Ryan Hagan, allowed the Pirates to trim the deficit to 14 points, 26-12, only to see Oak Hill use a quick 8-0 spurt to go up, 34-12.

Corey Dunn scored the final six points of the first half for the Rams as they owned a 40-15 advantage at the break.

After playing briefly in the third quarter, the Oak Hill starters gave way to their backups, who eventually built the lead to 34 points, 52-18.

But behind West, Goodwin and Hagan, Hicks managed to battle back to within 23 points at one time. However, the game was out of reach and Oak Hill got the win.

Dunn paced Oak Hill with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Jeffrey Cook added 11 points. Josh Golemon had just eight points, but snared 17 rebounds, while Martin and Zach Slaughter each had eight points.

West led the Pirates with 15 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Hagan contributed nine points.

The tournament semifinals will be played today, with the finals of the tournament taking place Saturday evening.
